Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher

I don’t know what it is about plane rides, but I feel like travel just makes me want to read more. I read Nettle & Bone when I flew home for the holidays last year.

I laughed, I cried, I was so deeply invested in this story. I still think about it, often. A new fairytale in a world that idolizes fairytales. This could have been a flop, but I don’t think that’s possible from T.Kingfisher. How magic is woven into the telling of the story, and the cast of characters chosen, the reader is delighted by familiar tropes just slightly turned on their head.

I loved how quick it was to read, these small books are stealing my heart. But while the book itself is small, it has a big impact. I wasn’t sure that I liked the main character at first, but her character growth and being put into place by mentors, and her heart? Unmatched.

The storytelling was different than most traditional fantasies today, but I think it most reminded me of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld which I still think about. It is very much a folklore and you don’t see every step and I loved that. Also, the cast of characters were the “outcasts” and seeing them in one motely crew for a heist type story made for a delightful tale.

I know that T.Kingfisher has more coming out and I cannot wait to go read more of their stories! What modern folklore stories have you been reading recently?
