The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten

Alright team. I adored Hannah Whittens For the Wolf duology and she once again leads us down a irresistible path on this magic, necromantic, and religious high fantasy.

I was lucky enough to get this ARC at NYCC last fall but finally got around to reading it while I was stranded at the Dallas airport in March. Team I inhaled it. I was sitting at the Papadeaux bar for about 6 hours and between bar convos got all but the last 100 pages read. I finished it on my plane and was emotionally devastated.

Truly it wasn’t until today that I was ready to dive in on a review. I’ve been thinking about it all week. This story does have a pseudo chosen one feel but as an unliked underdog, it made for a good twist on the tale. Lore is a compelling character, coming from the slums of the main city and compromising her morals to survive.

Even though Lore comes from a dark area, her resolve to survive however possible draws you in. I don’t always love an unlikable heroine, but I really really sided with Lore.

The mythology and religion that Whitten has built up are compelling, well thought out, and I think want to know more. The different gods and the mythology around them is deep and heady knowledge and I just want to know more. Especially when dealing with holding off death or channeling death, this world is right up my ally!

Also! Just as an FYI there was a love-triangle-ish thing going on with the two main male leads (who I thoroughly enjoyed) one a prince with layers-like onions-and the other a religious monk sent to mind Lore who has a past. Truthfully there is enough chemistry between the three of them that I’m not sure who I want to kiss who first…

If you do read this then please, please come yell with me about it! Those last like 100 pages were wild and I really need to know brainstorm!
