Okay, this was one of the best true fantasy romance YAs I think I’ve read. In true me fashion I’m getting this story to you over a year after I read it because finally I’m feeling like I used to, #thanksRona. But I think this would be a great darker read for the fall season!
With great pacing, a delicious enemies to lovers, and the perfect about of fantasy romance I don’t think I could find another book like this, but I want oodles of them.
Close your eyes and imagine a historical romance with hints of fantastical elements. The first thing someone probably thinks of is an adult romance novel right? But Tricia hits all of the best romance needs in one with this YA book. I could read so many of these as it keeps the pacing and the romance levels of YA–maybe treading just into NA territory with that swimming scene!– while losing none of what you’d want in a traditional romance novel. I ate it up, and I would recommend you would too.
Give me the dark elements of the Shadows the surround and protect the King. Give me the hatred and desire for power that pound through Alessandra’s veins. The Slytherin boy with a sliver of Hufflepuff, the truly devious girl who will stop at nothing to get what she wants… until her heart starts to get in the way.
The magic has rules, the love has thorns, and the story has a niche in my heart I’m worried I might never find again. Please please go out and read it so that hopefully we might get more books like it from Tricia.

I thought this one was interesting, though I was torn on whether I should be rooting for these people or not, since their plans as rulers seem to be to torture their citizens!

Oh that’s fair! I know that I just enjoyed their dynamic and how they played off one another. It’s def a morally grey all around kind of story.
