The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Okay. I attempted to pace myself with this book, but come on guys. Creepy fairy tales. A mystery to solve. On top of the fact that we’ve had a plethora of cozy rainy reading days lately. I never stood a chance.

The Hazel Wood was fun, and creepy, and in an extremely large genre, unique. Unlike other fairy tale stories I’ve every read, Melissa Albert had remarkable original stories, and weaved them with darker elements that could haunt you. She embraces the fact that fairy tales were made to scare children, to teach a story, and then delved deeper into what spinning a story means.

Additionally, this story isn’t just about the spooky factor, The Hazel Wood is a story of fighting for who you and and what you want. It’s a story of family. Life isn’t always pretty, it isn’t always happy, but those memories and the people you share it with are the bright spots in our world. Albert easily highlights that and shows the awkward nuance of relationships. Which I loved.

While The Hazel Wood may not be for everyone, it settled my soul on a dark rainy night, made me miss my family, and brought the delight of dark fairy tales that raised goosebumps on my arms and I am now dying to read. A perfect tale for fall, I recommend it for any Poe and Holly Black fans!

*As a side note, I received the exclusive FairyLoot copy of the book, so mine has a different cover, but I have a feeling there is going to be the same little beauty of a surprise under the dust jacket if you take it off! xx
