Wanderlust Wednesday: Croatia

In an attempt to keep up my travel portion of the blog, I wanted to introduce you to my Croatian road trip that I took with one of my friends in 2019.

We started by flying into the capitol city Zagreb, where we spent most of the day wandering around visiting the touristy parts, and enjoying great food.

I’m not going to lie, this was the first time travelling to a country that didn’t even have language that I could remotely figure bits and pieces out of, and that first night of ordering was a challenge. However it ended up with a delicious dinner, and if I got white wine instead of red it was worth it for the ice cream that came afterwards.

After Zagreb, we roadtripped down to our beautiful cabin in the middle of these misty low mountains. I would have loved to have spent more time there, but what was the true gem of that stop was stopping at Plitvce National Park.

I’m not going to lie, Plitvce and photos of it from pinterest was the entire reason I wanted to go to Croatia. I fell in love with the blue-green waters and the unique platforms that walked over lakes and under waterfalls. Being there was even better. I promise to go into a deep dive on each stop on our trip in future posts, so for now just enjoy a few photos from this stop!

After Plitvce we drove down to the coast with a stop at Split. I loved Split, it was a mix of city and touristy. Busy and buzzing with people, music, and shops. We stayed at an airbnb near the waterfront area and walked all around getting gelato (a personal goal of ours to try and find some every day we were just a stones throw away from Italy), taking a tour of the Emperor’s palace, drinking on the stone steps of the ancient courtyard, and lounging on the beach with a book and the sun.

Our delightful time in Split was followed up by another road trip. Our sunset drive along the coast was a bit nerve wracking as we chose to take the winding roads next to the sea, with huge drop-offs, but it was also gorgeous with the cliffside cities and the luminous sunset I’m so glad we chose that route.

While we loved Split, I don’t have to lie when I say that Dubrovnik stole my heart. Team, I was worried that because it was a Game of Thrones movie site and a bit more touristy that I wouldn’t love it as much, but that was hardly the case.

Dubrovnik earns its title as a sparkling gem of the Adriatic. Red tiled roofs, white cobble stone, beautiful blue waters, and so much history this rocky outcropping of a city is something that I think can easily steal everyone’s heart. I gave up my gluten-free life style for a night, knowing that I’d get sick, to eat what is easily the best pizza I’ve ever had. We enjoyed drinks and gelato, loved seeing the sites that Game of Thrones was filmed at, and swam in the water (I even did a little cliff jumping, much to Hannah’s terror)!

I can’t wait to tell you more about the cities and locations we stopped at and delve into what it was like to travel around this beautiful country. I highly recommend driving if possible.

Would you like to see these posts every other week until I’m done with one trip, or the first Wednesday of the month?
