The House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Craig

I am so very thankful for good friends who see fit to send me books that I’ve been lusting after. Sierra, you’re a gem!

I’m very nearly sure that this book was created from a dream of mine. If anyone finds out how Erin reached in to my dreams I’d love to know, I’d also welcome her to do it again.

The House of Salt and Sorrows is if Edgar Allen Poe’s Annabelle Lee decided to run off with The Twelve Dancing Princesses. One of my favorite spooky authors, and my favorite fairytale. This was a dark dream come true.

A well crafted world, doesn’t have to be all encompassing, as Erin weaves you a tale set nearly entirely on an island. She still brings in different cultures, and crafts her own legends and myths. Her fascinating characters only add to the creepy feelings.

She understands the challenges of family and sisterhood, and sets the stage beautifully. You already know what kind of story you’re about to enter when she opens on the funeral of one of the 12 sisters. It’s heartbreaking, and lovely. Showing the strength of a sisterly bond, and the underpinnings of what that means for self-confidence on becoming your own person.

I loved our main character, Annaleigh who is determined, responsible, and unrelenting as she is determined to find out why her sister died. Throw in a dark romantic stranger, a curse plaguing your household a best friend who’d follow you to the end of the earth, and ghosts playing with your sanity, you’re left with a haunting tale. I’d encourage you to join Annaleigh and her sisters as they dable in powers greater than they could imagine, and are left with real consequences. This tale is a terrifying and thrilling race to the end.
