So I realized that I’m starting NaNoWriMo, but I haven’t talk to you all about The Mighty Pens. The Mighty Pens was started last year by two amazing women Susan Dennard, a personal role model of mine and amazing author, and Kat Brauer. It’s a fundraiser that works with NaNoWriMo writers to raise money for good causes.
Last year they raised over $16,000 for the Malala Fund, with 89 other participants. This year the money is going toward NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo was started in 1999 to help a group of friends find encouragement in finishing their books. Almost twenty years later NaNoWriMo has become a nonprofit, and The Event for aspiring writers, poets, and even those brave souls finishing their thesis.
As per The Mighty Pens website “NaNoWriMo also offers the Come Write In program, where they provide resources and tools for libraries and community centers for writers to utilize. More well-known is their Young Writers Program, encouraging students and youth to read, write, and get involved in their communities. They provide materials and workshops for youth, and young writers have their own dedicated NaNoWriMo server and forums in which they can participate!”
After three years of participating in NaNoWriMo, I’m happy to announce that I am also a fundraising for The Mighty Pens. It has been program that helped me grow both as a writer, and as a human, and supporting all the wonderful work they do, it’s important to me and close to my heart. While the NaNoWriMo goal is always 50,000 words I am also currently going to grad school in the evenings after work. Therefore, I am shooting for 24,000 words. Just under the number I came at last year. This means I’ll be doing a nice round 800 words a day, which should be doable during hopefully my lunch break.
I’d love for you all to hold me accountable. Right now I’m only hoping to raise $100, but I’d love if it were more! Additionally if If you’re interested in donating, you can sponsor me or donate to the cause! If you’re interested in joining as a writer, it’s not too late! Find out more here.
