And we are back. With the last two reviews of this series, I was excited, I was high energy, and most importantly I wanted more. And yet again, I still want more. The Hunt by far is probably my favorite of the series. To me it tidied up a few of the pieces that I didn’t love in the earlier books.
As always, Neill’s writing is fast paced. Instead of feeling rushed, like we were barreling down a corridor toward the exit since as fast as our legs could carry, this time the writing just flowed. And not only was the pacing beautiful, but the character dynamic has 100 percent clicked into place. We know the cast, and better yet we understand their way of thinking and their motives. When they were on the page, they were as natural as breathing. And somehow just as all encompassing, when Claire was wound up in knots, so was I. When Gavin was a smart alec I grinned.
That’s not to say that there wasn’t interpersonal drama and conflict, goodness no. Would it be a Devil’s Isle book if there wasn’t drama abound? The action parts of the novel were evenly matched with internal drama as well. Which is how it should be. The Sight left Claire alone, and exiled by her community, forced to live in the shadows. This brought the readers much further into her head and I loved it.
And here is where I’m going to give into some appreciative love to Claire. Not only did we see the independent, sassy heroine from the previous books, but we saw one who refused to let everything she’d lost keep her down. And not only that, but a woman who knows her worth. She knows what she deserves and if she doesn’t get it, she is able to walk away. This is a lesson that is so hard to learn. I loved seeing a protagonist who has the confidence to say I get all, or nothing. It wasn’t easy, and she knew that this may mean she again loses something important in her life. It’s inspiring to see these traits on such vibrant display in a character.
This next installment of the series answered so many questions, opened up new ideas, and showed us more of the world around Devil’s Isle. It feels like Neill is on her upswing. The characters are on point, the setting is ever growing and complex, the tangled web of conspiracy is starting to slowly unravel, and the pace doesn’t let you put the book down.
And I only give you once guess as to how the book ends. However, unlike my last review where I was spitting mad at the cliff-hanger, instead I am relieved. It was a set up. Some stories are just meant to be series, and this urban fantasy world offers so much that I am glad to keep reading about it. So much happened in The Hunt, that as the ending came around I knew there needed to be about 60% more book than there was to make me happy.. So here’s to my favorite installment in the Devil’s Isle series yet, and Ms. Neill I eagerly await your next chapter in this series.
