Trickery (Curse of the Gods) by Jaymin Eve & Jane Washington

Alright team, this book. It was another recommend, and as a plus it’s on Kindle Unlimited. Soooo even though I have an ARC waiting for me (or two or three) I decided to start off with Trickery last night. After a long day, sitting down for a bubble bath, wine, and some light reading Trickery was absolutely perfect.

I devoured the book, it was such a fast read. And looking back on it, I shouldn’t have loved the book as much as I did, and still do. However, if there is one thing I’ve learned, (thank you Sarah J. Maas) it’s don’t always base a whole series off of the first book. If it hooked you and made you fall in love with the characters there is a reason.

I think what made the book work so well, was the pacing. It may have been a touch to fast—they seriously run everywhere!— but that fit with the story. Also I don’t know if it was just me, but the foreshadowing was fairly easy to figure out. Keep an eye out for D.O.D. and see if can figure out his identity before the reveal too! I definitely have my ideas about some of the things coming up, I’ll be interested to see if I’m right.

We didn’t gain a lot of character depth from our main cast, but somehow they still managed to each have individual personalities and I love them all. This astounds me, normally in literature twins and triplets are often seen as facets of the same person, while each of the Abcurse brothers was a dynamic character.

And Willa! I adore her, with the faults, over large heart, speaking before she thinks she is a heroine I will continue to enjoy seeing her grow. Especially because we’ve all had days where we think the world is out to get us and every thing that could go wrong, does. But Willa lives that every single day. And it has yet to sour who she is as an individual, ever the optimist about potentially life threatening things, and falling down stairs. A trait more of us could learn.

I’ve seen that several people needed at least 20% of the book before they decided they loved it, but Willa captured my heart right at the beginning. I mean who wouldn’t love, “the fact that Death’s colour was black. It just seemed so… predictable. Where’s the creativity, gods? I didn’t see why Death couldn’t have been pink. Or purple. What if he liked sparkles” (p. 18) Sparkles! A girl after own heart. Between the interesting world setting, funny characters that have already shown character growth, and Willa’s internal monologues I can’t wait to read the rest!

Highly recommended for a fast read, with lighthearted humor. Waiting for the later books and diving in deeper for a higher rating. Warning to those who get easily attached to fictional characters and those who look for their OTP.
