The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst

We are getting close to the end of the year and I know so many of us are looking forward to getting together with family maybe watching cozy videos, and many of us are pulling out old family heirlooms and dusting off memories of previous holiday seasons. For that reason I know that I tend to reach for familiar and cozy creature comforts during this time including what I’m reading. I read The Spellshop last year while painting my back room and it was lovely to dive back into this world.

I listen to The Enchanted Greenhouse earlier this year and I loved it! Caitlin Davies is a phenomenal narrator and she once again brought to life The Spellshop’s familiar world. What I really loved was that this could be viewed as its own standalone, it also featured another one of the librarians from the great library but you don’t need to know the backstory if you want to start here! There are fun easter eggs though.

This time we are dropped off in a winter landscape with a gruff gardener and a tenacious librarian. The gardener has been alone caring for the most incredible magical greenhouse, and our heroine literally wakes up lost and confused in the snow outside and decides to go see who is home. I think for me this book opened up the world building even more, and I loved getting to see the little nuances and histories—plus the  different ways that magic has influenced the world this is set in.

I didn’t even buy the physical edition this time because I knew how much I enjoyed the audiobook of The Spellshop. And I am so glad that I listen to it it was such a comfort and so funny, I loved getting to hear some of the banter or the awkward moments and it just made me smile. I think I need to listen to more cozy fantasy stories vs read them physically I inhaled it so fast!

The story also delves into the challenges that we have with relationships in similar ways as we dealt with in the first book, but I think really bringing light to the challenges of family and belonging and the challenges of communication. Plus there is a little bit of a force proximity trope which we know I love.

So if you need the perfect cozy winter read with magical gardens, funny talking plants, the cutest flying kitty, a journey growing confidence in oneself, and adorable idiots that need to “just kiss” then I think you should go and pick up The Enchanted Greenhouse
