It has all the basics of a shifter fantasy, and what can I say I have a thing for dragons. However, the depth of the relationship(s) wasn’t phenomenal. It’s very character driven, and I’m bummed that we didn’t get to actually read a bit more of the action.
It lends toward alpha-hole, and near Mary Sue tropes, but Donovan is a talented writer. Her words and the creation of the world was well done, and you want to keep reading. Plus, the political relationship between the Dragons and how they’ve used their blood to barter for breeding was an interesting new idea.
All in all, if you’re looking for a quick read, that falls into comfortable shifter-fantasy tropes, it’s probably up your ally. I’ll probably try the second book to see if the characters flesh out more, plus I liked Bram as a character overall.
